What do you need to know about "Smart Meters"?

Tipmont's smart meter project is just the beginning of a large scale plan to update our technologies. This will enable us to provide information to our membership and operate more efficiently. This is a solely Tipmont funded project with no ties to any federal subsidies or mandates. We simply feel that we need to keep up with technology to provide our membership with the best service possible.

Introduction

Associated Press recently posted an article entitled, “’Smart’ meters have security holes”, that brought up security concerns about the “Smart Grid” technologies that are being deployed by various electric utilities. I’d like to address the specific concerns about the technology that will be utilized by Tipmont REMC.

Smart Meters on the Way

In recent years, the technology for electric meters has advanced dramatically. At Tipmont, we’ve been keeping an eye on the advancements and continually evaluating what is available for our members. After a thorough review, we’ve decided it’s time to upgrade our meter reading system. Over the next three years we will be going through a process of changing out all of our old electromechanical meters and installing “smart” meters.

Although new vulnerabilities are found everyday in all industries, we will maintain an aggressive approach to securing all of our technologies including our Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) “Smart Meter” system.
